June 14th was picked to be flag day to commemorate the adoption of the flags use by the United States government which happened on June 14th in 1777, thanks to of the Second Continental Congress.  In 1916, a proclamation was issued officially establishing June 14 as Flag Day by then President Wilson and again in August 1949, National Flag Day made an Act of Congress. Even with its history, though, Flag Day is not recognized as a national holiday.
